Artists Style Idina Menzel, Kristin Chenoweth, Michelle Yeoh with Wella Professionals for Wicked Premiere – Style

Wella Professionals partnered with three wickedly talented hairstylists for the for the Los Angeles premiere of the major motion picture Wicked – creating beautifully spell-bonding looks for three stars:

  • Paul Norton styled Idina Menzel (Elphaba in the first Broadway production)
  • Jonathan Hanousek styled Kristin Chenoweth (Glinda in the first Broadway production)
  • Renato Campora styled Michelle Yeoh (Madame Morrible in the film)

See below for the inspiration behind their looks and step-by-steps from each stylist.

Paul Norton Idina Menzel

“For Idina’s Wicked premiere look, I took the dress’s architectural shape and design as my direct inspiration,” Norton explains. “Given the open shoulder on one side and predominant volume of the sleeve on the other side, I knew the hair being down, voluminous, and swept to one side would help balance it out visually.”

  1. I began by having her shampoo with Wella Professionals Ultimate Repair Shampoo and condition with Wella Professionals Ultimate Repair Conditioner.
  2. Then on her clean and damp hair I used Wella Professionals Ultimate Repair Miracle Hair Rescue treatment for protection against damage and help keep hair shiny and smooth prior to blow drying.
  3. After blow drying, I pushed most of the hair to one side, basically working off a side part, and then used a 1 1/4-inch curling iron in small sections to wave out her hair.
  4. For more texture, I waved each 2-inch section in the opposite direction as the previous. I used a workable hairspray to help for a better hold for each curl.
  5. Once the entire head was curled, I used a texturizer spray to separate and build out the volume of each wave.
  6. I went back with my round brush and blow dryer and blew the face frame away from the face and added more root volume to the crown.
  7. With one last swoop with the majority of the hair to one side, I then sprayed her hair for a final finish, and we headed to the red carpet!

“My inspiration for Kristin Chenoweth’s hair for the Wicked Premiere was to keep it simple, sleek, and shiny,” Hanousek says. “I didn’t want anything fussy or princess-like because her Pamela Roland gold metal mini dress was very ornate, and I felt we needed to be careful not to create anything that felt over the top or cartoonish. By keeping things simple the entire look was modern and beautiful.”

  1. To prep Kristin’s hair, we started with Wella Professionals Ultimate Repair Shampoo and Wella Professionals Ultimate Repair Conditioner to moisturize and strengthen her highlighted hair. I followed that up by spraying about 10 pumps of Wella Professionals Ultimate Repair Miracle Hair Rescue to repair damage and help reduce frizz.
  2. Next, I applied four pumps of Wella Professionals EIMI Flowing Form Anti Frizz Hair Balm through the midshaft to ends and blow dried the hair using a large round brush.
  3. Next, on thin horizontal sections, I sprayed Wella Professionals EIMI Stay Firm Hairspray and flat ironed her hair using medium heat.
  4. I used a brush and a few sprays of the Wella Professionals EIMI Glam Mist Shine Spray to smooth and shape the hair. I tucked the right side behind her ear to open her face up and so we could see her amazing earrings.
  5. I secured the hair behind her ear with a couple of bobby pins and locked it in with several strong sprays of Wella Professionals EIMI Stay Firm Hairspray. The result was simple, glamorous, healthy-looking hair.

Renato Campora x Michelle Yeoh

“Finally, a night many of us have been waiting for, the Wicked Movie premiere! We decided on this more exaggerated look because of the campiness that Wicked is,” Campora explains. “We kept it short, modern and voluminous. Thank you, Wella Professionals!”

  1. Hair health is integral to any hairstyle, that’s why I started with Wella Professionals Ultimate Repair Shampoo and Wella Professionals Ultimate Repair Conditioner. Hair is strengthened and moisturized, a perfect start to any style!
  2. I proceed by spraying the leave in Wella Professionals Ultimate Repair Miracle Hair Rescue treatment from mids to ends for extra repair and extra strength. I recommend this product to anyone with color treated hair who likes to take extra care of their locks. Ultimate hair health means ultimate shine.
  3. To protect all the repair done in previous steps, I added a walnut size amount of Wella Professionals EIMI Flowing Form Anti Frizz Hair Balm. This seals in moisture, protects hair from heat, and smooths all frizz.
  4. Next on damp hair, I applied Wella Professionals EIMI Body Crafter Flexible Volumizing Spray to roots and mid sections thoroughly distributing product in 1.5 inch sections. This allowed for even volume throughout.
  5. With a small round brush, I blow dried each section upwards and immediately pin curled to allow hair to cool off with my desired volume.
  6. Now that my foundation was prepped, I removed all pins and brushed each curl out while spraying Wella Professionals EIMI Stay Firm Hair Finishing Spray.
  7. I ended with a spritz of Wella Professionals EIMI Glam Mist for extra pizazz. I parted hair on the side for a more elegant and angular silhouette. This enhances the cheek bones and elongates the neck shape.
