The Power of Healing and Hair: How Dr. Kendra Segura is Redefining What It Means to Be a Black Woman in Medicine

Written By: Trish B, Award Winning Journalist

In the heart of South Los Angeles, where healthcare deserts often overshadow hope, Dr. Kendra Segura is reshaping both how care is delivered and how women—especially Black women—see themselves. Affectionately known as “Your OB/GYN Next Door,” Dr. Kendra is a board-certified Obstetrician-Gynecologist, community champion, entrepreneur, and advocate who is not only treating the physical ailments of her patients, but healing generations of mistrust in a system that too often ignores them.

Born and raised in South Los Angeles, Dr. Kendra’s journey into medicine is marked by determination and purpose. After completing medical school at Ross University and her OB/GYN residency at Rochester General Hospital, she made a deliberate choice to return home, choosing service over status. She currently practices at a local clinic providing high-quality, accessible care to underserved and uninsured women—many of whom would otherwise be overlooked by the system. Her patient-centered approach blends clinical expertise with cultural compassion, ensuring that each woman feels seen, heard, and valued.

That ethos gave birth to Ask Dr. Kendra, a modern concierge medical service rooted in integrative, whole-woman care. Through this practice, she tackles the very real health crises Black women face: fibroids, obesity, painful periods, hormonal imbalances, family planning, and more. Her model is intentionally inclusive and deeply personal—offering both telemedicine and in-person appointments tailored to meet women where they are. In her own words, Dr. Kendra believes “every woman, in every neighborhood, deserves to feel good inside and out.” And for her, that’s not just a belief—it’s a battle cry.

Outside the clinic, Dr. Kendra is also making waves in the beauty industry. In 2022, she became the proud owner of Hype Hair Century in Inglewood, California, a branch of the iconic all-Black woman-owned beauty supply franchise. But this is no ordinary beauty store—it’s a sanctuary. Located on Hawthorne Blvd, Hype Hair Century offers not just products but presence: a curated space where hair, culture, and community intersect. From wigs and braids to lashes and makeup tutorials, the store was built to honor and celebrate the fullness of Black womanhood. For Dr. Kendra, beauty is not vanity—it’s visibility. She opened the doors so that Black women in her city could have access to both care and confidence.

Audiences across the country also came to know Dr. Kendra as a cast member on Bravo’s “Married to Medicine: Los Angeles,” where she brought both candor and courage to the screen. She didn’t play perfect. Instead, she let viewers in on the real life of a working doctor and first-time mother balancing a demanding career, personal growth, and postpartum expectations. Her time on reality TV only amplified her platform—and made her advocacy feel even more authentic. She spoke publicly about body image, grace through motherhood, and the importance of mental health—especially for professional women who rarely have time to pause and process their own pain.

She recently expanded her wellness reach through Total Body Aesthetics, LA, where she now offers lipotropic injections, IV hydration, hormone testing, and wellness coaching. Her vision is clear: empower women to take charge of their total body health, naturally and holistically. Whether she’s diagnosing reproductive issues or offering a vitamin B12 shot, every patient experience is treated with the same level of integrity, warmth, and clinical care.

Though medicine and beauty may seem worlds apart, Dr. Kendra lives at their intersection. And it’s there—in that unique space of science and style, grit and glow—that she is building a legacy. A healer. A businesswoman. A mother. A voice for equity. Dr. Kendra Segura is redefining what it means to be a Black woman in medicine—not just by the lives she saves, but by the lives she inspires.

Because in every consultation, every corner of her store, and every message she shares with the world, Dr. Kendra reminds us: healing isn’t just about survival—it’s about joy.
