September is Hispanic Heritage Month and a good time to get to know LatinX beauty brand founder Nubia Rëzo. A master hairstylist with more than 40 of experience in the haircare industry, Rezo could often be found with a pair of scissors in her hands as soon as she could walk!
Born and raised in Colombia, Rezo moved to the U.S. in 1975. As a young stylist, she was formally trained by well-respected hair educators from top brands including Goldwell, L’Oréal, Wella, Vidal Sassoon, DevaCurl, Ouidad, Aveda, Paul Sebastian, and Mazella & Palmer. Today Rezo has success as a salon owner, product formulator, and curly-haircare educator.
Meeting Curly Hair Demands
Rezo developed her own unique haircutting technique with her signature rezoCut. The V-sectioning technique is cut in a circular motion to help maintain hair length while delivering body, balance, and shape to bring out the natural beauty of the client’s curls. This specialty cut draws curly-haired clients from around the globe to visit her New York Cty salon, rëzo Hair Salon, established in 2020.
Seeing the demand for further education surrounding textured hair, Rezo began teaching her own curriculum at Rëzo Academy, a four-phase class structure featuring curl-specific cut, color, and styling courses. At the academy, hairstylists receive in-depth education on texture, density, hydration, drying methods, and the craft of diffusion.
Rezo also recognized the need for salon-grade products that her clients could use at home. She launched Rëzo Haircare in 2019 with four core products—Curl Control Shampoo, Curl Control Conditioner, Curl Define Hair Gel, and Curl Define Hair Serum. This 100% vegan haircare line is free from sulfates and parabens and infused with plant-based ingredients like the growth-promoting antioxidant, black tea, and aromatherapeutic Rosa Rugosa flower extract. The expanded line offers a lightweight, collapsible diffuser perfect for travel, along with a plush microfiber towel that cuts drying time in half while reducing frizz, breakage, and heat damage.
