The 2023 Golden Globe Awards took place on Tuesday evening, January 10. Unsurprisingly, there was plenty to see and meme about. But as usual, the one aspect we’re most excited about is the hair.
Some of our favorite celebrity stylists gave us the scoop on their inspiration and products they used for the most glamorous styles of the night. Take a look at their complete breakdowns so that you can recreate on your own clients.
Ana de Armas
Blonde star Ana de Armas had celebrity stylist Jenny Cho (@jennychohair) to thank for her sleek, natural-looking blowout. Cho used haircare products from Brazilian-inspired beauty brand Sol de Janeiro and Dyson styling tools to get the silky soft look. See Cho’s step-by-step below:
“With Ana’s structured gown, I wanted to create a soft, face-framing style to complement her look.
- On towel dried hair, I prepped by misting Sol de Janeiro’s Milky Leave-In Conditioner, which is the perfect spray on this rainy day to combat humidity. I generously spritzed onto hair, focusing on mid-shaft through the ends to detangle, hydrate, fight frizz and add heat protection.
- Next, I parted the hair in the center with a tail comb and blew out the hair with a Dyson Supersonic Pro hair dryer and a large round brush for a bouncy blowout. I love how fast the Supersonic dries the hair, leaving it silky and shiny. The smoothing nozzle attachment is so precise. You have full control of the air and the heat flow.
- Once the hair was completely dried, I took an inch thick section across the nape. I used the Dyson Corrale straightener to create my big loose bend and worked my way up around the front of the hair.
- To finish the look, I ran a drop of Sol de Janeiro’s Brazilian Glossy Nourishing Hair Oil all over Ana’s waves to moisturize strands, block out frizz-causing humidity and, of course, add extra shine.”
Selena Gomez
Marissa Marino (@marissa.marino), Selena Gomez’s go-to stylist, prepped the Only Murders in the Building star for the Globes runway using René Furterer haircare and Olivia Garden tools. Her high pony wowed the crowd as she stunned in her purple gown. Here’s Marino’s step-by-step:
René Furterer Pro Tip: As a pre-shampoo treatment, apply the René Furterer Complexe 5 Stimulating Plant Concentrate, the essential first step for optimal scalp and hair health. This warming concentrate formulated with orange and lavender essential oils deeply cleanses and purifies the scalp to reveal naturally beautiful hair from roots to ends.
- “I started by blow drying her hair smooth with an Olivia Garden Ceramic Round Brush.
- Then, I added René Furterer STYLE Holding Gel and pulled her hair into a high ponytail, leaving out her front bang area, and secured with a hair tie.
- Next, I curled the ponytail with the Olivia Garden 1.25” Curling Iron, and sprayed with René Furterer STYLE Finishing Spray.
- Then, I brushed the bang area back into the ponytail and wrapped around the rubber band to secure.
- Lastly, I sprayed with René Furterer STYLE Shine Mist for extra shine.”
Julia Garner
“The inspiration for Julia Garner’s Golden Globe Awards look was her baby pink Gucci gown,” says stylist Bobby Eliot (@bobbyeliot), who used René Furterer products and GHD tools to achieve the Inventing Anna and Ozark star’s adorably styled pixie. “The dress is like a breath of fresh air, and we wanted the hair to feel easy and modern to compliment it.” See Eliot’s step-by-step below:
René Furterer Pro Tip: As a pre-shampoo treatment, apply the René Furterer Complexe 5 Stimulating Plant Concentrate, the essential first step for optimal scalp and hair health. This warming concentrate formulated with orange and lavender essential oils deeply cleanses and purifies the scalp to reveal naturally beautiful hair from roots to ends.
- “We started the look with freshly washed, towel dried hair.
- Using the René Furterer STYLE Protect Thermal Protecting Spray, I lightly sprayed section by section all over hair.
- Next, I used a small, pea sized amount of the René Furterer Absolue Keratine Ultimate Repair Serum and applied to the ends of the hair.
- Lastly, I used a small amount of the René Furterer STYLE Sculpting Mousse, and applied to roots, then combed through using a wide tooth GHD Detangling Comb to melt the products together.
- Using a GHD Hairdryer and GHD Natural Bristle and Oval Dressing Brush, I blow dried the hair smooth, locking in shine and moisture. I used a combination of wrap drying and beveling for movement using my GHD Oval Dressing Brush and 1.1 Natural Bristle Round Brush.
- Next, I used my GHD Tail Comb to section off hair into clean, diagonal sections. Using my GHD Flat Iron, I began smoothing out the hair section by section. While the hair was still warm, I used my GHD Oval Dressing Brush to mold the hair around the face with how I wanted it to sit, with small, no crease flat clips.
- Using the René Furterer STYLE Shine Mist, I lightly sprayed all over to achieve a high gloss finish.
- Lastly, I used the René Furterer STYLE Texture Spray at the roots and ends for added texture. I locked everything in with the René Furterer STYLE Finishing Spray.”
Lily James
Celebrity Hair Stylist Halley Brisker (@halleybrisker) used Great Lengths Hair Extensions to create nominee Lily James’ Golden Globes hairstyle, drawing inspiration from a nod to old Hollywood glamor.
“The benefit of the Great Lengths system is that they are sandwich tapes and sit beautifully flat, creating a seamless and invisible effect,” says Brisker. See below for his breakdown:
- Her damp hair was prepped with OLAPLEX No. 6 and No. 9. He then created a side parting just above the arch of her brow before blowing out with a medium size, round boar bristle brush, giving her hair big bouncy volume.
- Next, Halley rolled James’ hair under while drying, creating a nice beveled finish. He gave some lift in the front to really help accentuate the silhouette and then added in some extra holding spray and dried it with a tight tension, ensuring it popped upright nicely and stayed there. This look requires a slight A-line cut bob, which adds extra weight in the front to ensure the next flicked out step can work and that it finishes heavily in the front.
- He applied Great Lengths GL Tapes in shade 02 on either side to achieve this, just using enough to fill the space nicely; this should be judged person to person.
- Once the above steps had all been completed, he used some flat irons to kick/flick out one side, instead of rolling under the jaw, for that classic blown out feel.
- He completed the look with a wipe down from the parting and applying some finishing balm and a dusting of hairspray.
Kaley Cuoco
Clairol Professional Shimmer Lights Ambassador Christine Symonds (@christinesymondshair) glammed Kaley Cuoco up for the event in a way that would compliment her bejeweled lilac dress. The Shimmer Lights line was the perfect option for enhancing The Flight Attendant star’s signature blonde balayage on the red carpet.
“We decided to do a modern French twist to keep the look clean and classic and to not distract from the elegance of the dress,” says Symonds. “The look didn’t take long at all; we first prepped her hair with Clairol Professional Shimmer Lights Leave-In Styling Treatment to enhance her shade and gently condition the hair. Then, I sprayed her hair with Shimmer Lights Thermal Shine Spray for heat protection and to add extra shine before giving her a voluminous blow dry. Once she had the dress on, we twisted the hair up and secured with bobby pins.”
