New research has revealed the states with the most unmarried men, with New Mexico coming out on top. The study by family law attorneys Melone Hatley, P.C. analyzed the latest US Census data from 2022 to determine the percentage of men who aren’t married per each US state.
It found that New Mexico has the most unmarried men, with 55.7% of the male population not currently married. Of this, 39.8% have never been married, along with 11.4% who are divorced, 3% who are widowed, and 1.4% who are separated.
Louisiana takes second place on the list, with 54.4% unmarried men. This comprises 38.9% who have never been married, 10.5% who are divorced, 3% who are widowed and 2% who are separated.
Third on the list is Rhode Island, where 54.2% of men are not married. Of this percentage, 41.2% have never been married, 9.4% are divorced, 2.7% are widowed, and 1% are separated.
Fourth place on the list goes to Nevada, where 53.9% of all men in the state are unmarried. This comprises 37.9% never being married, 11.9% being divorced, 2.7% being widowed, and 1.5% being separated.
Rounding out the top five is Mississippi, where 53% of the male population is unmarried. Of this, 36.8% have never been married, 10.5% are divorced, 3.4% are widowed, and 2.2% are separated.
Commenting on the findings, a spokesperson for Melone Hatley, P.C., said: “The difference in the balance of married to unmarried men is interesting across all states but also understandable. Marriage can be an expensive thing to think about, but family members, expectations, or societal norms can influence the decision to do so. How this data develops into further generations will be worth watching.”
