Just as fashion looks to the past for inspiration, so do hair trends.

For those who want to add a bit of retro whimsy to their clients’ looks, PRAVANA Senior Artistic Educator Tiffany Lobdell Summers (@VividHairCreations) shares how she created her “Vintage Flair” makeover in collaboration with colorist @vividphasess.

Drawing from the carefree spirit of the 1960s and ‘70s while incorporating the bold color aesthetics and “hair tattoo” trends of the 2020s, this eye-catching look was created with PRAVANA’s ChromaSilk Platinum Toners and ChromaSilk VIVIDS professional hair dye.

Tiffany Lobdell Summers’ amazing “Vintage Flair” captures a cool retro vibe complete with makeup and wardrobe styling to complement the hair color. Tiffany shares her inspiration for this collaboration:

“The ‘70s era was a time of freedom, self-expression, and creativity, and it inspired us to create our own unique hair art. The bold colors, funky patterns, and retro vibe of the ‘70s were a huge influence on this hair project. From the iconic disco music to the groovy fashion trends, the ‘70s era inspired us by bringing that vintage flair into this collaboration.”

Steps

  1. Pre-lighten the hair utilizing your favorite global blonding technique and the Lightening Formula.
  2. Process up to 55 minutes until you reach a Level 9, shampoo, rinse and towel dry.
  3. Create a top section by taking a radial parting from below the temple to below the temple above the occipital bone and apply the Toning Formula.
  4. Process 20 minutes at room temperature, cleanse, rinse and dry the hair completely.
  5. Split the hair into two sections by taking a vertical parting from forehead to nape.
  6. Take a 2” horizontal section from along the bottom of the occipital bone and, taking vertical partings within the section, alternate applying VIVIDS Formulas 1 and 2. Continue to take 2” horizontal sections above the first section, and repeat the same technique until you reach the bottom of the temple/top of the occipital bone.
  7. For the remaining hair above on the left side, take a ¼” horizontal section, and laying it on a wide foil apply, VIVIDS Formulas 1 and 2 in a swirled pattern. Take down another ¼”, laying it directly over the previous section, and applying the same swirl of shades following the pattern of the first section, repeating until you reach the top of the head.
  8. For the right side, repeat Step 7, alternating VIVIDS Formulas 3 and 4.
  9. On a weft of hair, tape the top and bottom to a table to keep it secure and freehand paint the flowers with any combination of the VIVIDS Formulas or create a template.
  10. Process the hair and the weft for 30 minutes at room temperature, then rinse with cold water and high water pressure until the water runs clear and condition.
  11. Rinse and dry the hair and weft completely.
  12. Style the hair as desired and install the weft on one side at the part line, incorporating it into the style.
